Do you have a plan for your life? Or, are you just bumping along? Whew. Hit a speedbump here. Wow. Better slow down there. It’s high time you thought about your life from an overall perspective.
You need a ROADMAP for Success. Think of it as a blueprint for your nursing career. It’s a way for you to plan for your future. To prioritize what’s important to you and what is not. No need for it to be complicated.
Follow the “KISS” adage – “Keep it simple, Sweetheart!”
Move forward in your life as a nurse and/or as a Professional Legal Nurse Consultant by taking it one rung on the ladder of life at a time. You want a clear path, but one that allows for flexibility because you’ll need it.
Life and Education are not linear. There’s not just one path to success.
Start here:
- Write down your Goals. You can use Evernote, Google Docs, or just plain hand write it on paper. Be sure it’s portable and, even, shareable. You’ll want to be able to refer to it often. For example, “I want to have three attorney clients in my Professional Legal Nurse Consultant business within one month from today”.
- Write down three steps for each Goal: Keep telling yourself “KISS”. It needs to be simple and CLEAR. Specifically, what do you need to do in order to achieve that goal? Staying with our example above, consider these steps: 1) Go to Martindale and find ten attorneys in my area; 2) Write a short email introducing myself and telling the lawyer how my PLNC services could help in legal cases; and 3) Send the email to all ten attorneys.
- Evaluate your Goals AND your Steps. Sometimes it’s the goal that needs readjusting. Other times, it’s the steps. But, it could be you making excuses for yourself. Regroup and talk to yourself like you would talk to your best friend. Be kind. Don’t be so hard on yourself.
Consider an Accountability Partner. That’s someone who will hold you accountable and responsible for attaining your life and education goals. You can find that person in the PLNC Certification Course.
Be sure you track your progress. There’s always a good feeling you get when you realize you’re making progress.
Progress not perfection.
P.S. Comment below about your progress on your life plan.

Success is the constant, but what are the variables? You want to get the constants under control in your Professional Legal Nurse Consultant (PLNC) business so you can deal with the variables. Life will throw you some curve balls but you, as a PLNC, need to be ready to handle them. Here’s how to really be successful in your legal nurse practice:
1. Plan your work. There is no better way to effectuate a change than to have a plan in place. The most successful Professional Legal Nurse Consultants work off of a plan. Tip: Create your “To Do” list the evening before. No sense wasting valuable time as you start your day.
2. Prioritize. You want to accomplish items on your “To Do” list AND you want to be successful. Time management is your friend. Focus on managing it. Tip: Rank your list with the most pressing items at the top. Those are the items you need to focus your attention on first.
3. When you are fresh, focus on your top priority items. Whether you are a morning, afternoon or night person will not matter. What does matter is that you focus on your top priority items when you are at your best. Tip: Set a timer for one hour and complete as many of your top priority items first.
Now, go and start your list. You are a Professional Legal Nurse Consultant and you will succeed.

Repeat this: “I will not start the day without a plan”.
Your plan doesn’t have to be complicated. You want to use the “KISS” method — “keep it simple, sweetheart”. Every morning, plan to accomplish the most important tasks that day.
Your plan will simply be: Tackle the most important tasks first, while you have the most energy. Let’s look at a sample plan:
Marketing Your Professional Legal Nurse Consultant business:
- Contact ten attorneys by phone.
- Follow up by email.
- Write on your calendar to send a second email in one week.
It’s easy, when you let it be easy. Plus, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Now, go on and do something super fun.

We are friends. We made up our minds we were going to attend the Professional Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Course that was offered in the Washington, D.C. area. We had looked at getting certified as legal nurses for awhile and decided it was time to do it.
Our plan: Get PLNC certified and open up our legal nurse consulting business together.
So, we took the PLNC course and it was fabulous. We agreed it was the best course we’d ever taken. Looking back, I can’t remember if we got our business cards, letterhead and CV’s together first, or we just called three attorneys. Anyway, the first attorney told us to come into his office and we landed our first case!
Shall we say, the rest is history. We’ve been reviewing medical records ever since and it’s keeping us so busy.
Mission accomplished.
