You got a new tablet for the holidays and you want to use it in your business. First, you might be able to expense it, so check out irs.gov to be sure. Then, you want to put it to work for you.
Anything you can do on a laptop or desktop can be done on your tablet. You’ll just have to work within a smaller format. You should load some apps that’ll help you. Most documents from and to law firms are in Word. Yes, you could use another program, say, WordPerfect or Rich Text, but something often gets lost in the translation. The Word app is not free, but it’s worth it. It’s like going to a foreign country. You need to learn the basics of the language so you can converse. In the legal field, the language spoken is Word.
Should you get a free-standing keyboard? Unless you get very proficient at typing directly on your tablet, a free-standing keyboard could come in handy. Plus, it’s a business expense provided you use it for your business. Again, to be sure, go to irs.gov and check out the rules for business expenses.
To recap, consider expensing your tablet and keyboard. And, be sure you’ve loaded Word on your device. Now, you’re ready.

Repeat this: “I will not start the day without a plan”.
Your plan doesn’t have to be complicated. You want to use the “KISS” method — “keep it simple, sweetheart”. Every morning, plan to accomplish the most important tasks that day.
Your plan will simply be: Tackle the most important tasks first, while you have the most energy. Let’s look at a sample plan:

- Contact ten attorneys by phone.
- Follow up by email.
- Write on your calendar to send a second email in one week.
It’s easy, when you let it be easy. Plus, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Now, go on and do something super fun.
